In an NH₃ + CO₂ secondary coolant system, ammonia acts as the primary refrigerant to cool carbon dioxide in a cascade heat exchanger. The condensed liquid CO₂ is then pumped as a phase-change secondary refrigerant to air coolers, blast freezers and plate freezers, providing efficient cooling to the end application.
